The metric that determines your Instagram value to brands — and how to improve it.
Engagement rate is the single most important metric in Instagram influencer marketing. It determines your value to brands, your algorithmic reach, and your ability to convert followers into income. A 50K account with 6% engagement is more valuable to most advertisers than a 500K account with 0.5% engagement.
Engagement Rate = (Total Likes + Comments) ÷ Total Followers × 100
Example: 1,200 likes + 80 comments on a 50,000 follower account = 2.56% engagement rate.
Some agencies include saves and shares for a more complete picture:
Extended ER = (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) ÷ Followers × 100
| Account Size | Average Rate | Good Rate | Excellent Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano (1K–10K) | 5–10% | 8%+ | 12%+ |
| Micro (10K–100K) | 3–6% | 5%+ | 8%+ |
| Mid-tier (100K–500K) | 1–3% | 2.5%+ | 4%+ |
| Macro (500K–1M) | 0.5–2% | 1.5%+ | 2.5%+ |
| Mega (1M+) | 0.3–1% | 0.8%+ | 1.5%+ |
